Lake Boondooma

Located about 20 kilometres northwest of Proston and 75 kilometres from Kingaroy, Boondooma Dam is a leisurely three and a half hour drive from Brisbane.  The dam has a good-quality two-lane boat ramp adjacent to the lakeside camping area and another ramp at the camping area itself.

Camping at Bjelke-Petersen Dam Boondooma is one of a select few impoundments to have been stocked with both Murray cod and Mary River cod in the past.  Today the dam is stocked with Australian bass, golden perch (yellowbelly), silver perch and saratoga.  There is also a naturally occuring population of eel-tailed catfish (jew) and spangled perch.

The most sought after fish is the Australian bass.  These hard hitting, hard-fighting fish are most easily found by casting lures around the outside of the weed-beds in many of the bays that scallop the edges of this lake.  Alternatively, anglers can drop a small, unweighted shrimp along the outside edges of the weed and occasionally bob it to attract attention. The mainstay of the fishing, though, is the golden perch, consistently found in the heavily timbered areas in the Stuart arm and around many of the rocky points along the main basin.

A major fishing competition is held at Boondooma Dam each February attracting thousands of anglers - all seeking that elusive 'biggest catch'.

A Stocked Impoundment Permit is needed to fish Lake Barambah, Boondooma Dam and Lenthalls Dam.
